Abstract |
The increasing of ultraviolet radiation in the environment, become more significant if the reduction of the thickness of ozone layer in the stratosphere continues. As a consequence detrimental effects of various forms marine life in the upper layer of the sea can be expected. The observation on the marine bacteria to UV -B irradiation were carried out during in the winter season (20 January-27 February '93 ) and spring season (26 April-19 May '93 ). Six strains of marine bacteria isolated in the winter and four strains in the spring, from natural the Western part of the Dutch Wadden sea -Netherlands has been studied on the microbial biomass and metabolic activity of microbial community. This method based on the sensitivity of strain bacteria to Ultraviolet-B irradiation ( 290 -320 nm ) wavelength. Two parameters were studied, Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and Adenylate energy charge (AEC). These parameters were determined during 1.5 to 10.5 hours exposure time of UV-B irradiation for ATP , and for AEC time exposure of UV-B during 7.5 hours. The results of this study provide evidence of effects after irradiation on the marine bacteria. For ATP concentrations of the marine bacteria decreasing until 50 %, after 10.5 hours exposure UV-B irradiation, whereas, AEC ratio value after 7.5 hours decrease rapidly approximately until 0.5. Besides, comparison of each strain bacteria indicated that difference responses to UV-B irradiation. These differences were a relationship between pigment contents of bacteria, may be the pigment protect the cells against from UV-B irradiation. |
