Abstract |
The respective effects of macrofauna excretion and turbulence on the NH4 super(+) and NO3 super(-) fluxes occurring at the water-sediment interface of an oyster-bed were studied, using marine microcosms in which this interface was reconstituted. Experiments were performed in winter and summer conditions. In the presence of macrofauna (Carcinus maenas) or Crassostrea gigas), the NH4 super(+) content of the water column and of pore-water markedly increased. A turbulence simulation in the water column leads simultaneously to a marked increase of the water column NH4 super(+) content and a decrease of the pore-water NH4 super(+) content. In contrast to NH4 super(+), the NO3 super(-) content of pore-water and water column was not significantly modified by either turbulence or macrofauna. Ammonia excretion rate of crab and oyster was to a various extent influenced by turbulence according to the season and the considered species. |
