Abstract |
The anatomy and histology of the brachial digestive organs of the 3 species studied here are similar. The external epithelium consists only in banal cells (Asterias rubens) or in banal cells and granular cells (Marthasterias glacialis and Coscinasterias tenuispina). 3 cellular formations occur in the internal epthelium: banal cells (the most numerous), mucus cells and granular cells (probably zymogen). The internal banal cells always show an absorption function (bush border, enzymes in the apical region, pinocytotic vacuoles). However, one observes functional differences related to location. At the oral and aboral poles of the phyloricduct, the cytoplasm of the banal cells does not contain granules and these cells are specialized in the production of a ciliary current. In the other regions, the banal cells have a complex chemical content (glycogen, proteins, lipids, chromolipoids, lipoproteins associated or not with acidic mucopolysaccharids). Histochemical results, obtained from the latter type of cells, allow a separation in the family Asteriidae between C. tenuispina on one side and M. glacialis and A. rubens on the other side. Our results are compared with those of other authors. |
