Abstract |
This thesis serves an introduction into multiple aspects of overflow field testing on levees. It contains a description of the test setup and sensor equipment that was used during the overflow field test. This field test focuses on the effect of overflow on vegetative covers, in terms of erosion and changes to the bottom but also on the effect of the flow characteristics, as flow depth and flow velocity. A great number of different observation, recording and measurements techniques and methods are described with respect to capturing the profile of the levee, the shape of the vegetative cover, the evolution of erosion, the flow characteristics in clear water flow and aerated water flow. This work provides special attention to the use of LiDAR imaging to capture both the flow as the bottom. A simple 1D draw dawn curve model is used to check the usefulness of LiDAR imaging with respect for future model purpose of modeling aerated flow on vegetative covers. The broad scope of this work results in a number of research and analysis for future work. The observations are synthesized into advice on the use of the most successful measurement and observation techniques. |
