Abstract |
An exact knowledge of the hydrology of the Yser basin is very important in the framework of a global water management policy for this basin. The first part of the paper gives a description of the Yser catchment and the hydrological regime of the river. The Yser, with a catchment area of 1101km², has a length of 78km. Its source is situated in Lederzeele/France at an altitude of 35m and the mouth into the North Sea in Nieuwpoort/Belgium. The most important tributaries are in France the Peene Becque, the Sale Becque and the Ey Becque, while the Belgian main tributaries are the Poperingevaart, the Kemmelbeek, the canal Ieper-Yser and the Handzamevaart. A weir closes the Yser from the North Sea tides fluctuations, through which the river discharge period is only possible at low tide. The Yser is a typical river with a pluvial regime. On the French-Belgian border, the average yearly discharge is 2,8m³/s; the average figures for the winter and summer periods are respectively 5,7m³/s and 0,8m³/s. The Environment and Infrastructure department of the ministry of the Community of Flanders has a monitoring network of 13 hydrometrical stations, while the Belgian Royal Meteorological Institute maintains a network of 7 rain gauges. In a second part the paper shows a survey of the Dec 93-Jan 94 flood in the Yser catchment. The total rainfall for december 1993 is for the Yser valley 193,5mm and this amount is the highest monthly rainfall since 1953. Extremely high water levels and discharges are the consequence. At the French-Belgian border, a peak discharge of 64,3m³/s has been recorded on December 21th and 24th. At Lo-Fintele, the water level exceeded 4,50m TAW (TAW = reference level in Belgium) during 18 days with a peak water level of 4,89m TAW on December 25th and 26th. The average discharge in sea at Nieuwpoort is during the periode 1 to 3 January 1994 75m³/s. During this flood some 50km² of the Yser valley has been inundated. |
