Abstract |
The integumental pore pattern of adult females of Thermocyclops oblongatus (Sars, 1927), Thermocyclops africae sp. n, and of adult females and males of Thermocyclops neglectus (Sars, 1909), is mapped. A full redescription based on classical methods and on a study of the integumental perforations of the two species is done and, following the same methodology, Thermocyclops africae sp. n. is described. Their pore signatures are compared with that of T. emini. As in the latter, perforations of the three species are bilaterally symmetrical. For the four species, the number and distribution of perforations are similarly conserved on the rostrum, on the proximal zone of the dorsal side of the genital somite and on the anal somite and furcal rami in females. In contrast, we recorded differences in number and distribution of the perforations on the cephalosome, metasome and urosomal somites. There were also differences between conspecific males and females; their number and distribution of perforations were identical only on the anal somite. The total number of integumental perforations varied from 220 to 222 in T. oblongatus, 190 to 193 in Thermocyclops africae sp. n., 162 to 164 and 112 to 115 in females and males of T. neglectus, respectively. Each of the four species is therefore uniquely characterised by its pore pattern. |
