Abstract |
Data on seasonal and annual variation in densities of Phaeocystis pouchetii s.l. in the Marsdiep tidal inlet of the western Wadden Sea are reported for 1973 to 1985 inclusive. Each year a spring peak was observed followed by one or more smaller peaks in summer; no peaks were observed after September or before March. In 1985 Phaeocystis colonies were for the first time observed in winter (January/February). Over the 12-year observation period, an increase was found in cell numbers during the spring peak and summer, as well as in the duration of the spring peak and the length of the period that Phaeocystis pouchetii occurred in the plankton. No relation appears to exist between temperature and the timing of rapid increase or occurrence of peaks of Phaeocystis. Such inconsistency might be explained, among others, by the occurrence of different strains of Phaeocystis pouchetii s.l.. More taxonomic work is also needed to indicate whether antarctic and tropical records of Phaeocystis pouchetii pertain to the same species. |
