Abstract |
In recent years, various phenomena have spurred the rethinking of the policy of dredging works in the Maritime Scheldt. Disposal of the sludge from the maintenance dredging activities becomes more and more a precarious problem and new solutions and disposal methods have been worked out, in order to prevent the mobilisation of polluting agents and their migration to the surrounding environment. Underwater disposal is one of the most promising solutions and has been evaluated on a large-scale prototype test with a monitoring program in the harbour of Antwerp. The monitoring program is designed to identify all possible environmental effects of the disposal and storage of contaminated dredged material in an underwater disposal area. During the monitoring program, new measuring and sampling techniques have been developed and tested. Main conclusion is that the method carries large possibilities for the storage and maintenance of dredging materials, without severe influences on the environment. |
