| Abstract |
This chapter explores nematode diversity patterns across biomes and their dependency on prevailing physicochemical and biotic conditions. Currently, approximately 30,000 nematode species have been described worldwide, but research efforts are not distributed homogeneously across continents, latitudes, habitats and lifestyles (e.g. free-living nematodes are less investigated than are parasitic species). We present the objectives and methodologies used in nematode diversity studies before providing an overview of nematode biodiversity through the lens of factors and processes affecting the distribution of nematodes in marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. Finally, we highlight similarities and differences between nematode biodiversity patterns across biomes, highlighting the critical importance of nematodes in globally important ecosystem processes. We conclude that more attention should therefore be placed on studying nematode diversity (of species and ecological roles) across biomes to better understand their biogeography as well as their contribution to the delivery of ecosystem services. |
