Abstract |
GIS Tutorial is the directresult of the authord' experiences teaching GIS to students at high schools and universities, as well as working professionals. GIS Tutorial is a hands-on workbook that takles the reader from the basics of using ArcGIS Desktop interfaces to performing advanced spatial analysis. Instructors can use this book in the classroom, or the individual can use it for self-study.If you are new to ArcGIS Desktop and are using this book as a self-study guide, we recommend you work through the tutorials in order. However, the tutorials are independent of each other, and you can use them in the order that best fits you.In tutorial 1, readers will learn the basics of working with existing GIS data and maps. In tutorials 2 and 3, readers will learn how to build maps from GIS data and how to create, then add, graphs and reports to their maps. The exercises in tutorial 4 teach the reader how to create geodatabases and import data into them. Tutorial 5 has the reader explore the basic data types used within GIS and use the Internet to gather GIS data. Editing spatial data is a large part of GIS work, and in tutorial 6 readers learn how to manage an edit session, digitize vector data, and transform data to match real-world coordinates. In tutorial 7, the reader will learn how to map address data as points through a process called address geocoding. In tutorials 8 and 9, the reader performs spatial analysis using geoprocessing tools and analysis workflow medels. New to this edition, tutorials 10 and 11 provide instructions for two ArcGIS extensions. Chapter 10 introduces ArcGIS 3D Analyst, allowing readers to create 3D scenes, conduct line-of-sight studies. Finally, chapter 11 introduces ArcGIS Spatial Analyst for creating and analyzing raster layers, including hillshades, density maps, site suitability surfaces, and risk estimation surfaces. To reinforce the skills learned in the step-based exercises and to provoke critical problem-solving skills, there are Your Turn tasks and advanced assignments within each tutorial. The quickest way to increase your GIS skills is to follow step-based content with independent work. The Your Turn task and assignments provide this important follow-up by having the reader perform tasks and solve the problems without the aid step-by-step direction. This book comes with a CD with exercise and assignment data, and a DvD with a 180-day trial of ArcView 9.3. |
