Abstract |
The basic functional plans of the four major maxillopodan groups are compared, and the probable sequence of steps by which each evolved is analysed. It is suggested that the evolution of the copepod and cirripede/branchiuran lines was initially determined by the differentiation and specialization of the anterior part of the trunk as a locomotory center. The evolution of the mystacocarids was initially determined by the retention of both cephalic feeding and cephalic locomotory mechanisms, and evidence is presented which indicates that a specialized thoracic locomotory tagma has never been a feature of this line. Other evidence presented in support of a taxon Maxillopoda is reinterpreted. It is concluded that Maxillopoda is not a valid taxon. |
