Over het archief

Het OWA, het open archief van het Waterbouwkundig Laboratorium heeft tot doel alle vrij toegankelijke onderzoeksresultaten van dit instituut in digitale vorm aan te bieden. Op die manier wil het de zichtbaarheid, verspreiding en gebruik van deze onderzoeksresultaten, alsook de wetenschappelijke communicatie maximaal bevorderen.

Dit archief wordt uitgebouwd en beheerd volgens de principes van de Open Access Movement, en het daaruit ontstane Open Archives Initiative.

Abstract:

De onderzoeksgroep Écologie Numérique bestudeert mariene plankton met behulp van digitale beeldvormingstechnieken in combinatie met geautomatiseerde en semi-geautomatiseerde machine-learning classificatie. Het onderzoek richt zich op het aanpassingsvermogen van deze dieren aan veranderingen in het milieu (temperatuur, verzuring en eutrofiëring). Daarnaast ontwikkelt de onderzoeksgroep ook wetenschappelijke software, genaamd Zoo/PhytoImage, voor de uitwerking van ruimtelijk-temporele plankton reeksen door de staalverwerking te automatiseren. Deze open-source software maakt het mogelijk verschillende soorten digitale beelden van plankton te analyseren, en de verschillende planktonische organismen digitaal op deze beelden te meten, te tellen en te classificeren. Vervolgens berekent het ecologisch belangrijke variabelen, zoals abundanties, biomassa's en groottespectra per taxonomische groep of voor het gehele staal. Ook andere uitbreidingen op R-software worden ontwikkeld, zoals SciViews voor een homogenisering van de gebruikersinterface, pastecs voor de analyse van spatio-temporele reeksen in de ecologie, aurelhy voor de ruimtelijke interpolatie van hydro-klimaatvariabelen, of het genereren van grafieken die rechtstreeks voor publicatie kunnen worden gebruikt.
