Abstract: |
The Maritime Branch of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management was founded in Gdynia 1921. It is one of five branches of the IMWM exclusively dealing with marine aspects of meteorology and conducting oceanographic service as statutory task. The annual budget of IMGW-OM is ca. 2.4 mil DM. The Branch has a staff of ca. 170 employees including 23 scientists. The following units form the general structure of the Maritime Branch: - Department of Marine Meteorological Service, Stations Network and Operational Synoptic Office - Department of National Hydrological-Meteorological Service - Department of Oceanography and Baltic Sea Monitoring - Data Base and Data Management Unit - Laboratory of Meteorology, Marine and Polar Climatology. The service departments of the Maritime Branch carry out the routine hydrological-meteorological service in the Polish coastal zone of the Baltic Sea and cooperate in this field with the respective services of other Baltic countries. The Department of Oceanography and Baltic Sea Monitoring is conducting the monitoring programme of the Baltic Sea according to the obligatory commitments of the Republic of Poland within the HELCOM COMBINE (combined open sea and coastal zone monitoring) Monitoring Programme. IMGW - OM is a co-owner (together with the Sea Fisheries Institute, Gdynia) of a research vessel Baltica which is equipped with physical, chemical and biological laboratories and can accommodate 13 scientists. |
