In 2012 verloren we Jean Jacques Peters, voormalig ingenieur van het Waterbouwkundig Laboratorium (1964 tot 1979) en internationaal expert in sedimenttransport, rivierhydraulica en -morfologie. Als eerbetoon aan hem hebben we potamology (http://www.potamology.com/) gecreëerd, een virtueel gedenkarchief dat als doel heeft om zijn manier van denken en morfologische aanpak van rivierproblemen in de wereld in stand te houden en te verspreiden.

Numerical study of the hydrodynamic forces acting on a surface-piercing hydrofoil in natural mud

In this work, a series of numerical simulations using CFD techniques are presented for the case of a surface-piercing hydrofoil in various fluid combinations, some of which replicate a muddy environment. Different numerical results are compared with experimental measurements, demonstrating a good agreement. Initial simulations in freshwater demonstrated fairly good quantitative and qualitative approximation of the experimental results, using standard solvers. For simulations in muddy environments, the natural mud layer was represented as a non-Newtonian fluid, including viscoplastic properties, using the Worrall-Tuliani viscosity law. For the second case, the hydrofoil was towed in complete mud, in which the viscoplastic effects of the natural mud were present and have a significant influence on the hydrodynamic forces. Finally, simulations in seawater and natural mud were conducted, representing muddy environments. The numerical simulations included in this work displayed a fair approximation to the experimental results in all conditions tested.
